Every year Dallas County High School participates in the Christian Outreach Alliance’s annual, “Stock the Shelves,” food drive. The Christian Outreach Alliance serves needy citizens of Selma and Dallas County by giving qualified clients bags of food twice a month. Their program does not receive government funding so Dallas County High’s help with this project brings lots of canned food that otherwise wouldn’t be there!
This year, BETA Club sponsor Amy Reeves, is running the food drive. She’s in charge of this drive every year, and strives to get more and more people involved whenever possible. Each year she involves the student BETA club leaders to encourage fellow peers to donate. These students put up flyers, post on social media, and even run a competition between classes! The class who donates the most canned items wins a pizza party!
Last year, now senior, Janna Helms, and three other BETA officers attended the food drive. These four students volunteered their time to go to the Christian Outreach Alliance center and stock the shelves or bag food items for incoming clients. Janna was kind enough to tell us some of the things they did and why you should help. “When someone brought cans or food we would go out to their car and took it in for them.” She says you should help “because it goes to a good cause and to the people who aren’t able to get their own food.” These officers will attend the food drive this year, as a group, and continue to help this impacting program.
Selma is one of the poorest cities in Alabama with a poverty rate of 41.1%. The Christian Outreach Alliance strives to involve people and schools in the community to better the lives of poverty ridden individuals. Other schools and individuals can help with this event by calling Nancy Bennett at the Christian Outreach Alliance and visiting their Facebook page. Schools can host their own food drive and donate the cans to the pantry.
